Mammogram Questions

Questions about our services?  You've come to the right place.

Breast cancer affects one in eight women in the United States, making it the second most common form of cancer in women. But according to the American Cancer Society, the breast cancer death rate declined 34% between 1990 and 2010. We believe this good news is thanks to early breast cancer detection: monthly self breast exams, regular clinical examination, and quality annual mammograms. Charlotte Radiology's mobile breast centers bring early breast cancer detection to you, providing women with a more convenient option for breast cancer screening.

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is a special low-dose x-ray of the breast. Physicians, called radiologists, use the images to detect breast cancer, ideally as early as two years before a lump can be felt. Charlotte Radiology is proud to offer digital mammography—the gold standard for breast cancer screening, and one of the most recent advances for breast cancer detection. Our practice was the first in the area to offer this technology.

Current guidelines from the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the American Cancer Society (ACS), the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) recommend annual screening mammograms for all women, beginning at age 40. And mammography is the only screening method that is consistently proven to reduce cancer deaths.

What is a Mobile Breast Center?

Don't let the wheels fool you! Our mobile breast centers are 38.6-foot-long state-of-the-art breast screening facilities. The vehicles, staffed by two certified female technologists, feature a registration and waiting area, private dressing rooms, and an examination room for completing the digital mammogram. Once an exam is performed, one of Charlotte Radiology's board-certified radiologists, specialized in breast imaging, will interpret the mammogram and send the confidential results to the patient and their primary care physician. Billing for the mobile breast center works the same as in Charlotte Radiology's breast center locations. So really, our mobile breast centers aren't very different from our freestanding breast centers—they simply bring early breast cancer detection to you.

Why have your mammogram on a mobile breast center?

Charlotte Radiology's mobile breast centers provide women with a more convenient option for breast cancer screening—ultimately improving compliance. Patients will experience the same quality, compassionate care, expertise and comfortable atmosphere that our freestanding breast centers offer. This includes digital mammography and female technologists certified in breast imaging. Digital mammography improves exam quality, reduces radiation and shortens exam time. For your privacy, the mobile breast centers are equipped with two dressing rooms that lead directly into the exam area. Most appointments take less than 30 minutes from check-in to completion. Our mobile breast centers have the capacity to bring mammography to 10,000 annually. We're proud of the miles we've covered and the women we've served, and we're dedicated to making early breast cancer detection not only accessible, but also convenient for all women in our region.

Early Detection Guidelines

Catching it early is the key.

Screening Mammogram

Annually starting at age 40

CBE (Clinical Breast Examination)

Every three years for women 20-39; annually for women 40 and older

BSE (Breast Self Examination)

Monthly starting at age 20

Breast MRI

Women at high risk (greater than 20% lifetime risk) should get an MRI and a mammogram every year. Women at moderately increased risk (15% to 20% lifetime risk) should talk with their doctors about the benefits and limitations of adding MRI screening to their yearly mammogram. Yearly MRI screening is not recommended for women whose lifetime risk of breast cancer is less than 15%.
