Study on Survival in Young Breast Cancer Patients

In collaboration with Dr. Rebecca Greiner of Levine Cancer Institute’s Department of Supportive Oncology, Charlotte Radiology Radiologists Eric Wang, MD and Taylor Stone, MD co-authored the abstract, Overall and Progression-Free Survival in Young Breast Cancer Patients with Low Muscle Mass and Density.

In this study, researchers measured the amount of muscle and fat present on pre-treatment CT scans of women diagnosed with breast cancer ≤40 years old. These measurements were compared in survivors and non-survivors for associations in overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). The results from the study are that sarcopenia (low muscle), high muscle fat, and poorer muscle quality are associated with a worse prognosis and shorter survival in women diagnosed with breast cancer ≤40 years old.
