Mobile Mammography

Making breast health
a priority with Mobile
Mammography

Half of women 40+ schedule annual mammograms; the other half don’t. One of the primary reasons women delay mammograms is because they feel they can't take time away from work, family, or other commitments. Other reasons include access and insurance concerns. Understanding this, Charlotte Radiology’s mobile mammography program brings early breast cancer detection to the workplace and community, providing women with a more convenient option for annual screening mammography.

Our mobile breast center offers the same advanced 3D imaging technology and subspecialized care as our freestanding breast centers, along with an all-female team of certified technologists. Appointments take less than 30 minutes from check-in to completion so you can get back to your day. Most insurance providers cover annual screening mammograms at 100%.

Patient FAQs

What can I expect at my mobile breast center appointment? Expand

Our mobile breast center is a 38-foot-long state-of-the-art breast screening facility staffed by certified female mammography technologists. Inside, you’ll find a registration and waiting area, private dressing rooms, and an examination room for completing your 3D screening mammogram. Once your exam is complete, one of our board-certified radiologists, subspecialized in breast imaging, will interpret the mammogram and send the confidential results to you and your primary physician. If additional images are necessary, we will personally contact you to discuss next steps.

Who is eligible to have a 3D screening mammogram at the mobile breast center? Expand

Women 35 and older who have not had a mammogram in at least a year are eligible. A physician referral is not required, but patients must provide a physician’s name for reporting purposes. Women under 35 with a history of breast cancer (mother or sister with breast cancer before age 50) also are eligible, although in this case a physician referral is required. Patients must not be pregnant or breastfeeding. Screening mammograms are for patients with no new breast lumps/concerns. If you are experiencing breast concerns, contact your physician right away. When scheduling your appointment on the mobile, our scheduling coordinator will be able to discuss and clarify any questions regarding eligibility.

How are appointments scheduled for the mobile breast center? Expand

Scheduling appointments is quick and easy via our mobile scheduling line: 704.367.2232 ext. 6241

How and when will I get the results? Expand

Charlotte Radiology provides confidential results to all patients and their primary care physician of choice within about a week. If additional images are needed to make an accurate diagnosis, we will personally contact you to discuss recommended next steps.

What do I need to bring to my appointment? Expand

Please bring your insurance card and wear two-piece clothing for easy changing. If you’ve had a previous mammogram at a facility other than Charlotte Radiology, please bring those films to the appointment or provide us with the name/address of the facility where they were performed.

Corporate/Community Event Planning FAQs

What are the onsite requirements to schedule a mobile breast center event? Expand

There must be a level, paved area for parking that accommodates 48 feet in length and 15 feet in height (approximately 6-7 parking spaces). It is important that the mobile site is in close proximity to a restroom, as there is no restroom on the mobile breast center. Each site location should have a designated contact to assist Charlotte Radiology with event day logistics. We will need directions and a map of the parking area ahead of time.

What is the minimum number of participants? Expand

The minimum number of participants is 25 patients per day unless otherwise confirmed. Participants should schedule appointments at least two weeks in advance via our mobile scheduling line at 704.831.4242 in order to ensure minimum requirements have been met prior to the event date. Walk-ins may be accepted depending on patient eligibility and whether the appointment schedule is filled for the day.

What are your hours of operation? Expand

Typically, we schedule an 8-hour day in order to see the required number of patients. The mobile breast center is available weekdays and weekends upon request and depending on staff and date availability.

What payment options do you offer for corporate clients? Expand

Screening mammograms for insured patients will be billed directly to the individual’s insurance company, unless otherwise contracted by the event sponsor. Charlotte Radiology accepts most major insurance providers, and annual screening mammograms are typically covered at 100%. For uninsured patients, a discounted self-pay fee is due at the time of service. If the patient does not pay at the time of service, payment for the non-discounted rate can be arranged after the exam. Payment plans are available. If a company/organization opts to pay for each patient’s exam, a discounted group fee will be due 30 days from receipt of invoice. For pricing information, please call 704.334.7812.

Can women who do not have insurance participate? Expand

YES. Any female who meets Charlotte Radiology’s eligibility requirements is allowed to participate. A discounted self-pay rate is available, or the non-discounted rate can be billed after the exam.

Can I invite spouses and dependents? Expand

YES. Any female who meets Charlotte Radiology’s eligibility requirements is allowed to participate.

How far in advance do I need to book the mobile breast center? Expand

We recommend reserving the mobile breast center two months prior to your event (or earlier to ensure best availability); however, 45 days is the required notice in order to allow enough time for promotion and scheduling. A minimum of 25 participants must have scheduled appointments by two weeks prior to your event.

Does Charlotte Radiology provide free mammograms to the uninsured population? Expand

Charlotte Radiology has for-profit status and, thus, does not receive grant funding to provide free services. For this reason we are unable to offer free mammograms. However, we are wholly committed to doing our part to make sure all women have access to life-saving mammograms, and we do offer discounted exam costs when an organization is able to fund a screening day. Additionally, we partner with Levine Cancer Institute: Project PINK to provide free screening mammograms for local uninsured/underinsured women. For more information on Project Pink, visit Project PINK’s website.

What are the eligibility requirements for Levine Cancer Institute: Project PINK? Expand

Women who meet the following criteria may be eligible for free mammograms through Project PINK:

  • Must be 40 years or older
  • Must not have insurance covering a mammogram annually
  • Must not have Medicare or Medicaid
  • Must live in Mecklenburg County or Union County, NC
  • Must have a primary care provider
  • Must be one year since previous mammogram
  • Must not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Must have no new breast lumps/concerns (patient should promptly contact their primary care physician if experiencing breast problems) or pre-existing conditions
