Angioplasty & Vascular Stenting

An aortic aneurysm is an abnormal bulging or weakness in the wall of the aorta. Aortic aneurysms can occur either in the chest (Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm, TAA) or in the abdomen (Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, AAA). Though typically asymptomatic, they can enlarge over time, and rupture becomes a concern. Aortic aneurysm risk factors include family history, male gender, smoking, hypertension and age over 65. Ruptures can be life threatening, but fortunately most aneurysms can be repaired using minimally invasive endovascular techniques.

Treatment

Aortic Aneurysm Endograft Repair
Aortic Endograft Repair is a minimally invasive procedure often used to treat aortic aneurysms. Interventional radiologists insert endografts (stents covered with impermeable fabric) through a small puncture in the thigh. Under live X-ray guidance, the endografts are positioned to create an internal conduit, or bridge, for blood flow, thereby depressurizing the aneurysm and eliminating the risk of rupture.

FAQ

What is Angioplasty and Vascular Stenting? Expand

A minimally invasive image guided procedure to help improve blood flow in arteries throughout the body.

When is Angioplasty or Vascular Stenting needed? Expand

Angioplasty and vascular stenting are often used to help treat conditions in which the arteries of the body are blocked or narrowed. The blockage is often caused by atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis occurs when plaque narrows the artery. If the narrowing is severe, symptoms such as cramping in the legs can occur. The plaque can continue to build leading to a narrowed or even blocked artery. Angioplasty and vascular stenting are common in the treatment of peripheral vascular disease (PVD), stroke and carotid artery disease.

How is the procedure performed? Expand

Patients are given mild sedation through an IV inserted in the arm during the procedure. An interventional radiologist inserts a small, thin balloon tipped catheter into an artery and places it at the blocked vessel.

The balloon is inflated under x-ray guidance to open the artery and improve blood flow. The balloon is then deflated. Vascular stenting occurs when balloon angioplasty is ineffective.

After the artery is opened by the balloon, a small wire tube is inserted to maintain the opening. Once the angioplasty and or stent placement is complete, the catheter is removed.

Patients are taken to a recovery area and may stay overnight in the hospital. Patients typically are able to walk within 2-6 hours after the procedure and resume normal activity within one week.

Often, patients will have follow up imaging of the artery which may include an ultrasound, CT (computed tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) exam.

How do I schedule a consultation? Expand
