Arthrography

Arthrography is a diagnostic tool that physicians use to evaluate joints. It works in conjunction with CT technology to provide physicians with a closer look at a patient’s hips, wrists, ankles, shoulders or knees. A contrast medium is injected into the joint to enhance visualization of the area, revealing joint abnormalities like cartilage tears and other injuries.

FAQ

What should I expect? Expand

The radiologist will insert a needle into the joint to inject a contrast material, which allows radiologists a better look at the presence of disease or other abnormalities. Once the appropriate amount of contrast has been added to the joint space, you will be taken to CT for imaging.

You may resume normal daily activities after the arthrogram, but athletic activities should be avoided for 24 hours. Athletes should consult a coach or trainer prior to resuming practice. You may experience some discomfort and swelling of the joint for a day or two after the arthrogram. You may treat the pain with over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen or Tylenol. Ice packs for the first 24 hours (3-4 times up to 15 minutes per time) may be helpful, followed the next day with heat (4 times a day for 20 minutes each) if necessary.

How do I prepare? Expand

Since arthrography requires injection of a contrast medium, please inform the technologist prior to your exam if you have any known allergy to iodine or X-ray dye. Additional preparation information is available for CT.

When will I get the results? Expand

One of our subspecialized physicians will review your scan and send a report to your physician. Your physician will contact you to discuss the results.
