Calcium Scoring

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the #1 killer of men and women in the United States. And it can remain completely asymptomatic for decades. Fortunately, a 10-minute noninvasive Calcium Scoring screening exam uses CT technology to detect the amount of calcified (hardened) plaque in your coronary arteries – and determine your risk for a heart attack. Physicians will compare the findings with the results of other patients your age and sex, ultimately providing you with a number (or “score”) that predicts your risk for a future heart attack. Knowing your score is knowing your risk!

Charlotte Radiology also offers Coronary CT Angiography (CCTA) as a non-invasive study of the coronary arteries. CCTA is sometimes performed as a follow-up to a Calcium Scoring exam.

FAQ

Who needs a Calcium Scoring exam? Expand

Calcium Scoring can be beneficial for those with risk factors for heart disease, including:

  • age - men 40+, women 45+
  • high cholesterol
  • history of smoking
  • high blood pressure
  • family history of heart disease
  • high stress levels
  • sedentary lifestyle
  • diabetes

If one or more of these factors apply to you, we encourage you to talk with your doctor about Calcium Scoring. Patients who have had previous cardiovascular treatment or surgery, including coronary stinting, coronary bypass surgery, pacemaker placement, or valve replacement, are not candidates for this screening procedure.

What should I expect? Expand

The scan is quick and simple, and it only takes 10 minutes. No injections or medications are required. You will be asked to complete a brief risk factor questionnaire. Next, you’ll lie on the table (fully dressed) while the technologist places EKG leads on your chest. While the scan is being performed you will hold your breath for a brief period to ensure quality images. Once your scan is complete, a radiologist will review the findings.

How do I prepare? Expand

Please arrive 30 minutes early at a hospital location and 10 minutes early at outpatient centers. Do not eat for one hour prior to your exam, and avoid caffeine and exercise for 12 hours prior.

When will I get the results? Expand

One of our subspecialized radiologists will study the scan and send a report to your physician, including your cardiac score. Your doctor will contact you to discuss the results. He or she may recommend a treatment plan, which could include diet and lifestyle changes, medication and/or further testing.

How do I schedule a Calcium Scoring exam? Expand

This procedure requires a physician referral. Typically your referring physician will schedule an appointment for you. If you have been asked to schedule the appointment yourself, please have your physician's order and any pre-authorization information required by your insurance or health plan provider in hand, and call 704-442-4390.

What about billing and/or insurance coverage? Expand

Since Calcium Scoring is considered a screening test for asymptomatic patients, many insurance companies do not reimburse for its cost. If you have insurance with CIGNA or MedCost, it may be covered with a doctor's referral and prior authorization. Payment may be requested at the time of service. For questions regarding insurance coverage, and/or billing please call 704-362-7020.
