Computed Tomography (CT)

CT is a noninvasive test that’s able to generate internal images of the body to help physicians accurately diagnose – or rule out – injuries or diseases. CT is often used to determine the cause of unexplained pain, dizziness or shortness of breath, or to further evaluate areas of interest found in other imaging tests. In emergency cases, CT can quickly reveal internal bleeding to help save lives. It’s a powerful tool for evaluating nearly every area of the body, including head, sinuses, chest, spine, abdomen and pelvis. And it can help physicians determine the size and location of tumors and plan the best course of treatment for many cancers.

CT technology is also used to generate a list of imaging studies, including Calcium Scoring, Coronary CT Angiography (CCTA), CT Colonography and CT Lung Cancer Screening.

FAQ

What should I expect? Expand

CT examinations can last from 15 to 45 minutes. You’ll lie on a table that rides on a track through the doughnut-shaped scanner. You’ll be asked to relax and lie still so that the machine can capture clear images. At times, you may be asked to hold your breath for up to 30 seconds. During the scan, you may hear low humming sounds from the CT machine as it rotates around you, producing images from different angles. These images are then studied on a computer screen by your radiologist.

Some patients are given a contrast medium, either orally or through IV, to improve image visibility.  Learn more about the risks of contrast here.

How do I prepare? Expand

Please arrive 30 minutes early at a hospital location and 10 minutes early at outpatient centers. Do not eat for one hour prior to your exam.

If you are having a CT of the abdomen or pelvis, please arrive 1 hour prior to your exam to drink the oral contrast. Please avoid food and drink for 4 hours prior to the exam. (If necessary, you may have small amounts of water to take medications.) Contrast is iodine-based, so please let us know if you think you may be allergic to iodine.

When will I get the results? Expand

One of our subspecialized radiologists will study your CT images and send a report to your referring physician within 48 hours. Your referring physician will be the one to contact you with results.
