Peripheral Artery Disease

Peripheral Artery Disease, or PAD, is a condition in which the arteries that carry blood to the legs become narrowed or clogged due to accumulation of atherosclerotic plaque. The disease limits blood flow to the tissues of the legs, which can cause pain with exertion. Also referred to as Peripheral Vascular Disease, PAD can occur in anyone; however, it is more common in men and women over the age of 50. Risk factors include smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Most patients with PAD can be treated through minimally invasive endovascular methods.

Treatment Options

Balloon Angioplasty – used to treat vascular blockage(s) to improve blood flow. Under X-ray guidance, an interventional radiologist will inflate and deflate a small balloon across the blocked artery to stretch or mold the artery open.

Atherectomy – a minimally invasive device that uses a small blade to remove plaque in the arteries.

Stent Placement – a stent (metal device) may be placed the keep the artery open

FAQ

What are the symptoms? Expand

Symptoms include cramping pain in legs while walking (relief with rest), pain in legs or feet while resting or lying flat, ulcerations or wounds on legs or feet that will not heal, and cold and/or painful legs or feet.

How is PAD diagnosed? Expand

PAD is diagnosed through an Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) test, vascular ultrasound and CT angiogram.

Is treatment covered by insurance? Expand

Angioplasty is typically covered by insurance in full as a treatment for PAD. Your out-of-pocket depends on your particular insurance plan and whether deductibles have been met.

What can I expect in terms of billing? Expand

Your insurance card must be presented at your appointment, and a co-pay may be due, depending on the requirements of your insurance provider. Charlotte Radiology will verify insurance coverage and benefits; however, specific questions regarding your policy and coverage should be directed to your insurance carrier, as insurance plans and benefits vary widely.
