PET Scan
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a diagnostic examination most often used to detect cancer. It’s also used to determine whether a growth is malignant (cancerous) or benign (noncancerous), evaluate the progression of disease, and assess the effects of clinical therapies. During a PET scan, a radioactive substance is administered to the patient. It travels throughout the body and is absorbed into organs and tissues. More radioactive material collects in cancer cells than normal cells and appears brighter on the image. PET scans can also be used to evaluate patients with memory disorders like Alzheimer’s Disease, seizure disorders that aren’t responsive to medical therapy, and for the assessment of cardiovascular disease.
