Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)
Genicular Artery Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure used to relieve chronic knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. It is often recommended for patients who have not found relief with medications, physical therapy, or other conservative treatments, and who are not candidates for or are not ready to undergo knee replacement surgery. Knee pain from osteoarthritis is frequently linked to inflammation and increased blood flow in the joint. By reducing this excess blood flow, GAE can help decrease inflammation, relieve pain, and improve mobility.
TREATMENT
Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)
During this outpatient procedure, one of our board-certified interventional radiologists makes a small puncture, typically in the upper thigh or ankle/foot. Using real-time X-ray guidance, a catheter is threaded into the arteries that supply the knee. Tiny particles are delivered through the catheter to block abnormal blood flow, which helps reduce inflammation and pain.
