Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)

Genicular Artery Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure used to relieve chronic knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. It is often recommended for patients who have not found relief with medications, physical therapy, or other conservative treatments, and who are not candidates for or are not ready to undergo knee replacement surgery. Knee pain from osteoarthritis is frequently linked to inflammation and increased blood flow in the joint. By reducing this excess blood flow, GAE can help decrease inflammation, relieve pain, and improve mobility.

TREATMENT

Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)
During this outpatient procedure, one of our board-certified interventional radiologists makes a small puncture, typically in the upper thigh or ankle/foot. Using real-time X-ray guidance, a catheter is threaded into the arteries that supply the knee. Tiny particles are delivered through the catheter to block abnormal blood flow, which helps reduce inflammation and pain.

FAQ

What are the benefits of GAE? Expand

GAE offers a non-surgical treatment option for managing osteoarthritis-related knee pain. Many patients experience a significant reduction in pain and improvement in function within weeks.

Who is a good candidate for GAE? Expand

GAE is typically appropriate for patients with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis who have not had success with other treatment options and are not yet ready for joint replacement.

Is Genicular Artery Embolization covered by insurance? Expand

Coverage depends on your insurance provider and specific plan. Our team can help confirm your benefits and answer questions about out-of-pocket costs.

What can I expect after the procedure? Expand

Most patients return home the same day. Some mild soreness at the puncture site is common, but recovery is generally quick. Pain relief and improved function are often noticeable within a few weeks.
