How Uterine Fibroid Embolization Treatment Works

Uterine fibroids are common, noncancerous growths that develop in the walls of the uterus. If left untreated, these growths, also known as fibroids, cause a range of symptoms that can significantly impact your quality of life. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatment option that can help you take back your life from fibroid symptoms.

Uterine Fibroid Symptoms

Estimates vary, but it’s believed that up to 80% of women in the U.S. will experience uterine fibroids during their lives. They are most common in women in their 30s, 40s and 50s but can happen at any age.

Symptoms may include:

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual periods
  • Pain during menstruation
  • Constipation, bloating
  • Frequent urination
  • Pelvic pressure, heaviness
  • Pain during sex
  • Back pain
  • Fatigue from anemia

Uterine fibroids sometimes shrink on their own, but most continue to grow without treatment. A few of these symptoms may be indicative of other conditions. For example, if pain during sex is a major symptom, this could indicate another uterine condition called adenomyosis, which can sometimes coexist in patients with fibroids.

The UFE Procedure

UFE is a leading minimally invasive treatment that can help relieve symptoms without surgery.

A thin tube (catheter) is inserted into a blood vessel in the wrist or groin and guided to the uterine arteries. Small particles are put into the arteries to stop blood flow to the fibroids. This causes them to shrink.

Most women experience long-term symptom relief after UFE. And recovery is typically quick and easy. You will likely go home the same day and be back to your usual routine within a week.

Proven Results of UFE’s Effectiveness

UFE is an effective procedure that:

  • Decreases fibroid size by 50–60%
  • Eliminates abnormal uterine bleeding in more than 90% of patients
  • Reduces general fibroid symptoms by 88–92%
