Breast Density & Supplemental Screening

Dense breast tissue is found in more than 40% of women. A dense breast consists of more glandular and fibrous tissue than fatty tissue, and a mammogram is the only way to measure density.  The presence of dense tissue may make it more difficult to detect areas of concern through mammography alone and is associated with increased risk of developing breast cancer. In addition to annual screening mammography, women with dense breasts may consider adding supplemental screening options, like abbreviated breast MRI (ABMR), screening breast ultrasound (SBU) or automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) to their breast health plan.
